In 2017 I embarked on a hut-to-hut hiking expedition through the Austrian Alps and Italian Dolomites.
I spent 4 nights on the Stubaier Höhenweg (Stubai High Trail) and another 4 nights in the Seiser Alm and Rosengarten area of the Dolomites. The Alps have an incredible system of mountain huts (called rifugios on the Italian side) which are really nothing like "huts" at all: they serve hearty food, usually have showers, and provide a range of shared dorms and private rooms. There are over 1,000 huts in Austria alone, and the beauty of the system is that it allows you to hike days on end with nothing more than a daypack.
This expedition journal is a chance for me to recount my experiences, share my photography and pass on tips and advice I learned from researching and hiking this trip.
