The concept of "true colors" was to highlight the difference between how things appear and how they are, to see the moral and spiritual reality behind their physical manifestations. I like to imagine this image being read in either direction: a seemingly luxurious home built upon a rotten foundation or a humble exterior hiding a more marvelous hidden reality.
